Why we made a podcast about digging holes and cooling chips.

The Dirt to Data Podcast is produced by Data Airflow in Boise, Idaho. It exists because the data center buildout is the biggest construction story in the country and most of it happens behind a fence.

The idea

Every AI model runs on a building. Someone bought the land, fought through the permit, signed the power deal, poured the slab, ran the pipe, and commissioned the cooling before a single GPU turned on. Those people rarely get asked how it works. This show asks them.

Each episode follows one of six systems a data center depends on: energy, water, cooling, environment, jobs, and community. The hosts keep the questions plain and the answers specific. If a guest says a number, we want to know where it came from.

Who makes it

Eric Sonner leads Data Airflow, a Boise company that designs and commissions airflow and cooling for data centers. Lance Teel, the co-host, comes from the energy side through Atlas Energy, where the job is getting power planned, procured, and delivered to the largest loads on the grid.

Episodes are recorded in the Data Airflow studio in Boise, on the road at guest sites, and remotely. Guests are the developers, engineers, utility leaders, tradespeople, and local officials doing the work.
